SCYC Cruising Club Hike, March 11, 2006

What to do when the harbor is shoaled or it’s too cold to sail?

Go for a hike!

The Cruisers are planning a hike around Toro County Park in Monterey County.  We’ll conclude the hike with a sunset drink with our friends at Elkhorn Y.C.  This will be an easy to moderate hike of 5 to 8 miles.  We can car pool from the SCYC or meet up at Toro Park.  Toro Park is located about 1 hour and 20 minutes from SCYC.  The hike will begin at 11 am.  Car pools should be ready to leave at 9:30 am.  We’ll hike for an hour or so, pick a fine view for our alfresco lunches, then hike for an additional two hours to work off our lunches.  That should get us to Elkhorn Y.C. in time for the sunset.   Bring your lunch, water and comfortable walking or hiking shoes.  Binoculars and a hand held GPS can add to the fun.  I’ll have maps to pass out.  This hike will be on well marked trails over rolling hills which are covered with wild flowers this time of year.  We’ll get some views of the Monterey Bay coastline with the Santa Cruz Mountains as a backdrop and in the other direction the Salinas Valley.   Toro Park is located off of Hwy 68 between Salinas and Monterey.  Easiest way to get there is by way of Reservation Rd, turn right on Hwy 68 and follow the signs to Toro Park.  There is an entry fee into the park.  Let’s meet up at the bathrooms to the left of the entrance.  Sign up sheet will go up 3/3/2006. Your leader is Kate Riley, (831) 477-2936.

Also, Kate will be at the club for dinner on Friday, March 3rd, so drop in and see her if you would like to discuss this event.

Note: Rain cancels.
